UVI Scientist Transforms Glass Waste into a Recycling Project

St Croix will soon have a way to recycle glass that can be used for sandbags and other applications! University of the Virgin Islands Marine Scientist Howard Forbes Jr. spearheaded a new project that recycles glass bottles into sandbags for hurricane season. This effort will help divert glass waste away from the landfill and beaches and be able to use it in a number of different applications including sandbags, water and septic filtration, as an aggregate for concrete and asphalt, landfill cover material, and more. Dr. Forbes purchased five glass crushers that will be distributed to community partners on St. Thomas with a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. Two more will be purchased for St. Croix with additional funding from the Ocean Conservancy.

Caribbean Journal Names USVI Destination of the Year

The US Virgin Islands was named Destination of the Year by Caribbean Journal. The journal announced its 7th annual edition of our Caribbean Travel Awards across 20 different categories and we are so happy to see that beautiful US Virgin Islands recognized.

The publication calls USVI “a model for tourism reopenings around the region — highlighting what was, before the pandemic, an increasingly hot tri-island destination its own right, from the launch of a new tourism brand for St Croix early in the year to a rekindled hotel development movement.”
